Photo Blog

Many of my clients are really into photography so invariably the topic of cameras, lenses, and software comes up. This blog is where I can blab to my hearts content about all that stuff, and other interesting topics, without my wife falling asleep.

A Rainy Day In Key West

I was going through some wedding photos from last year to put up on my new website and I came across this one. Colleen and I were waiting for the wedding couple to arrive, and the weather was looking a little threatening. Suddenly, the Key West sun came blasting through the clouds and this beautiful rainbow appeared right in front of us. The couple arrived right then to enjoy the sight…..get married…..and head off into the Key West sunset. I love this little...

Key West in July

Key West in July

One thing I really like about my job is that I get to meet people from all over the world. Key West has an international reputation as a great place to visit. Here’s a shot of Leonie and Marc from the Netherlands, taking a stroll down the beach after their wedding on Smathers Beach. They dressed just right for an intimate outdoor ceremony in hot July. I like to get as far away as possible from my subjects and zoom in ….. everyone’s much more comfortable without a big Nikon in their face. Relaxed people make better photos. 1/500 sec...

Snow? What’s that?

Snow? What’s that?

OK, usually I’m not one to gloat, but today I’ll make an exception. The entire US is covered in feet of snow…. sub zero temperatures…. ice. Except, of course, sunny Key West. Colleen and I went to the beach this morning for our usual coffee and croissants and they were setting up Sculpture Key West. It’s an annual exhibition of contemporary outdoor sculpture thats held in Key West every year. It was a little chilly though. I had to wear a long sleeve shirt along with my shorts and flip flops. Gloat Gloat Gloat. Then this...

Ahoy – flip flop overboard

We were sailing aboard the Schooner Appledore last night, photographing the wedding of Neil and Lisa. As we were coming into Key West harbor one of the mates lost his flip flop overboard, so he climbed into the rigging to try to spot it as the light quickly faded away. That’s Jupiter glowing up there in the upper left. Alas, the flip flop was never seen again. Ah, the perils of winter sailing in Ket West. Nikon D90 with 18-200mm lens at 18mm. !/20 sec at f 3.5 . ISO at...

Aboard the Floridays

Aboard the Floridays

I love November. One of the nicest months down here in Key West. It’s cooled off considerably, good sailing breezes. This is a shot from a wedding aboard the Floridays. Very nice Irwin sloop. My wife Colleen pronounced Celia and Jason husband and wife up in the bow, and they seem quite happy about it. I can’t believe I get paid to go sailing and take pictures…. two of my favorite things. This one was 1/160 sec at f 6.3, lens at 18mm, iso 400. Nikon D90 with...

Cruise Ship wedding photos

I was just going through some of Jamie and Joe’s wedding photos and thought I’d blog on this one. They were going to get married on Smather’s Beach here in Key West during their port call, unfortunately the remnants of Hurricane Paula made it a rather dreary day. So they obtained permission to have their wedding ceremony onboard and then we’d do some photographs around the ship. After a lovely ceremony, with complimentary Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries provided by Carnival Cruise lines, we photographed in the ship’s...

Hurricane Paula Wedding

So Hurricane Paula was meandering over Cuba,  and DiAnne and Michael really wanted their Key West beach wedding to happen… hopefully with some nice photos. No problem. We had to postpone for 24 hours….. and it was, shall we say, a bit cloudy… but the wedding was beautiful, and we got some great shots. Congratulations...

Going coconuts on 10-10-10

We started getting lots of phone calls and emails from people wanting to have a simple Key West wedding on a particular Sunday in October ….. not a typically busy time of year down here. And then we realized …… it’s 10-10-10. Well, it was a glorious day. Nice breeze, lots of sunshine. Actually, a little bit too much sunshine. Brock, the groom, was having trouble keeping his eyes open for their photographs after his and Mandy’s wedding ceremony. So I suggested sitting in the shade under and convenient coconut palm for a...
